# Diagnose and Respond to Peat Subsidence and Leaning Palms in Oil Palm

> Identify peat subsidence and leaning palms from uneven ground surface, tilted palms, and shrinking root zone on deep peat, and manage them with water-table control, compaction, and platform planting.

Peat is not stable soil. When drained for cultivation it oxidizes, compacts, and shrinks - the surface subsides at 3 to 5 cm per year and cumulatively 1 metre or more over a 25-year rotation. Palms grown on subsiding peat lean, tilt, and eventually fall as the substrate under them shifts. This is the defining long-term concern of peat oil palm and has no complete solution - only management options that slow the process.

**Regional priority:** Very high on deep-peat plantations (Sarawak, Sabah, Sumatra, Kalimantan, coastal Peninsular Malaysia). Not applicable on mineral soils.

## When oil palm is most vulnerable

All ages. Immature palms on newly drained peat lean earliest. Mature palms on second-generation peat blocks lean fastest because the substrate has already lost much of its bulk from the first rotation.

## How peat subsidence shows in satellite data

* **LiDAR and drone elevation surveys** are the only reliable remote-sensing tools for subsidence rate. Standard optical imagery does not measure elevation change.
* **NDVI decline** on chronically subsiding blocks as leaning palms lose canopy area and productivity.
* **True-color imagery** shows leaning palms as irregular canopy shadows and uneven canopy top.
* **Historical imagery comparison** over 5 to 10 years reveals block-level subsidence effects on canopy structure.

  Peat subsidence is irreversible. Every centimetre lost is permanent within a rotation. Water-table management is the only lever that meaningfully slows the rate.

## Field symptoms

* **Palms leaning** in the direction of subsidence, often uphill of drainage channels.
* **Uneven ground surface** with visible dips near drainage channels and around each palm base.
* **Exposed root plates** as the surrounding peat surface drops.
* **Drainage channels deepening** relative to the surface over years.
* **Cracked peat surface** during dry periods - a fire risk indicator.
* **Palm fall-over** on severely subsided blocks, especially after wind events.
* **Reduced yield** on leaning palms as photosynthesis and bunch positioning are compromised.

## Reduce the damage by

* **Controlled water table** - target 50 to 70 cm below the peat surface, not deeper. A deeper water table oxidizes peat faster.
* **Compact peat at planting** - roll or press the peat surface to remove air pockets that accelerate initial subsidence.
* **Platform or hole-and-heap planting** - plant on a raised, compacted mound that stabilizes the palm through early years.
* **Do not deepen drains beyond design** - deeper drains lower the water table further and increase subsidence.
* **Support leaning palms** with propping poles during early leaning to give roots time to re-anchor.
* **Salvage-fell severely leaning palms** early rather than losing them to storm-fall - the trunk and bunches can be recovered.
* **Fire-break maintenance** on peat blocks - cracked, dry peat is a major fire risk.
* **Consider not replanting peat blocks** to oil palm at second rotation - some estates convert badly subsided peat blocks to other uses (aquaculture, restoration).

## Set an alert for early warning

  Turn the diagnosis into a trigger. Peat subsidence is a slow, multi-year problem; the useful alerts are elevation surveys and water-table records, not imagery.

Recommended settings for peat subsidence on oil palm:

* **Annual LiDAR or drone elevation survey** on deep-peat blocks. Track subsidence rate per block.
* **Water-table monitoring dashboard** - piezometer readings from each block reviewed monthly.
* **Leaning palm census reminder** - inspect visually every 6 months; record and remove candidates for salvage-felling.
* **Fire-risk secondary alert** - dry peat and lean are correlated.
