# Diagnose and Respond to Nettle Caterpillars in Oil Palm

> Identify nettle caterpillar outbreaks from rapid defoliation, stinging larvae, and characteristic feeding patterns, and manage them with natural enemy conservation, trunk injection, and coordinated outbreak response.

Nettle caterpillars (*Setothosea asigna*, *Setora nitens*, *Darna trima*, *Darna diducta*, *Thosea vetusta*) are episodic defoliating pests of oil palm in Southeast Asia. Larvae are covered in urticating spines that sting on contact - a hazard for workers as well as a pest. Populations build rapidly during outbreaks and can defoliate large blocks within a single generation, causing yield losses that persist for months.

**Regional priority:** High in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Second in economic importance among defoliators, after bagworms.

## When oil palm is most vulnerable

Any age from yield build-up onward. Peak-yield palms suffer the largest yield loss. Outbreaks are episodic and localized rather than continuous; a block can go years between outbreaks and then lose 20 to 30% of canopy area in a few weeks.

## How nettle caterpillars show in satellite data

* **Rapid NDVI drop across affected blocks** during outbreaks. Similar signature to bagworms but often faster and more localized.
* **True-color imagery** shows the browning canopy in heavy defoliation.
* **Distinguishable from disease** by the speed of decline (days to weeks) and by absence of clustering around specific palms.
* **Field-scale imagery alerts** during outbreak season are useful early warnings; combine with scouting for larval counts.

  Nettle caterpillar larvae sting. Field workers, scouts, and harvesters can suffer painful reactions from contact with fronds or falling larvae. Protective clothing is required during outbreak scouting.

## Field symptoms

* **Skeletonized leaflets** - larvae feed on the soft tissue between leaf veins, leaving the vein skeleton intact. In heavy attack, whole fronds turn brown.
* **Larvae visible on the underside of leaflets** - green, yellow, or brown depending on species, with distinctive spines or tufts.
* **Frass** on lower fronds and ground.
* **Empty pupal cases** attached to fronds or fallen on the ground.
* **Adult moths** visible at dusk during outbreak periods.
* **Rapid defoliation** - a healthy-looking block can lose 30 to 50% of canopy area in 2 to 3 weeks during a full outbreak.

## Reduce the damage by

* **Preserve natural enemies** - parasitoid wasps (*Trichogramma*, *Apanteles*, *Chrysonotomyia*), predators (*Sycanus*, *Cosmolestes*), and viral diseases (nucleopolyhedrovirus) provide substantial natural control. Broad-spectrum insecticide use precipitates outbreaks by killing parasitoids.
* **Beneficial plant borders** - the same *Turnera*, *Cassia*, and *Antigonon* plantings used for bagworms feed nettle caterpillar parasitoids too.
* **Regular census** - count larvae per frond monthly during outbreak seasons.
* **Trunk injection** during outbreaks with a systemic insecticide registered for the method - emamectin benzoate, or acephate, which is restricted to coconut and oil palm and requires a purchase authorisation. Localized, and spares free-flying parasitoids. **Monocrotophos has been banned in Malaysia since 31 December 2025** - see [Pesticide registration](/snippets/pesticide-registration).
* **Targeted spot spraying** on outbreak patches - preferably with selective insecticides such as *Bacillus thuringiensis* (Bt) or emamectin benzoate.
* **Do not spray broad-spectrum insecticides prophylactically** - the same natural-enemy-loss risk as bagworms.
* **Coordinate regionally** during outbreaks - moths disperse widely.

## Set an alert for early warning

  Turn the diagnosis into a trigger. During outbreak season, satellite alerts combined with weekly scouting are the most sensitive early-warning combination.

Recommended settings for nettle caterpillars on oil palm:

* **Weekly to monthly census** during outbreak seasons on high-risk blocks.
* **NDVI drop alert** - trigger on a drop of 0.10 or more within 2 to 3 weeks (faster than typical alert cadence).
* **Historical hotspot map** - previous outbreak blocks get elevated monitoring.
* **Adult moth trap review** where trap networks are in place.
