# Diagnose and Respond to Copper Deficiency in Oil Palm

> Identify copper deficiency in oil palm from mid-canopy chlorosis and interveinal yellowing on peat and sandy soils (the classic 'peat yellows' signature), and correct it with copper sulphate soil application or foliar CuSO4.

Copper deficiency in oil palm is nicknamed **"peat yellows"** because it is almost universal on deep peat soils and common on sandy or heavily leached mineral soils. Peat locks up copper in organic complexes; sandy soils simply have very little to start with. Symptoms show on the mid-canopy fronds, giving a distinctive stratified color pattern where the youngest fronds are green, mid fronds are yellow-chlorotic, and older fronds may still be green.

**Regional priority:** Very high on peat plantations (Sarawak, Sumatra, Kalimantan, coastal Malaysia). Common on sandy soils in West Africa. Rare on well-mineralized clay soils.

## When oil palm is most vulnerable

Any age, but Cu deficiency is a chronic condition on peat that must be managed continuously through the stand's life. Nursery and immature palms on peat show the most dramatic symptoms; mature palms show milder but persistent deficiency.

## How copper deficiency shows in satellite data

* **Block-wide NDVI decline** on chronic peat blocks compared to the [ecosystem baseline](/guides/Crop/Oil-Palm/oil-palm-ecosystems).
* **True-color imagery** may show a pale-yellow tint on the mid-canopy of affected blocks.
* Not distinguishable from Nitrogen deficiency in imagery alone - both look pale from above. Ground inspection of *which fronds* are affected tells them apart.
* Slow trend; monthly to quarterly review is appropriate.

<Note>
  On peat, if the whole canopy looks pale and Cu treatment does not green it up, suspect Nitrogen instead. The two commonly co-deficit and are usually managed together.

## Field symptoms

* **Mid-canopy fronds chlorotic** while youngest and oldest fronds are relatively green - the diagnostic stratified pattern.
* **Interveinal yellowing** with green veins on affected leaflets.
* **Small, narrow leaflets** on chronically deficient palms.
* **Reduced frond length and canopy area** in chronic cases.
* **Necrotic spots** on the mid-canopy leaflets in severe deficiency.
* **Slow growth** on nursery and immature palms on peat.

## Reduce the damage by

* **Copper sulphate (CuSO4) soil application** - typically 25 to 100 g per palm per year on peat, applied to the palm circle. Frequency depends on soil test and leaf analysis.
* **Foliar copper sprays** for rapid correction on symptomatic immature palms - 0.5% CuSO4 solution.
* **Copper-containing compound fertilizers** where custom mixing is not available.
* **Peat water table management** - a controlled water table (50 to 70 cm) improves Cu availability by preventing extreme reduction.
* **Do not over-lime peat** - excess Ca raises pH and further reduces Cu availability.
* **Avoid high P applications alone** - excess P can induce Cu deficiency.
* **Manage Cu together with N and other peat-specific nutrients** - peat blocks need an integrated nutrient program, not element-by-element correction.
* **Test Cu at every routine leaf sampling** on peat and sandy blocks.

  Copper is toxic at high rates. Foliar sprays over 0.5% or repeated soil applications without leaf-test justification can cause copper toxicity. Confirm deficiency before repeat treatments.

## Set an alert for early warning

<Tip>
  Turn the diagnosis into a trigger. Copper is a slow, chronic peat-block condition; use annual leaf sampling and quarterly imagery review rather than fast alerts.

Recommended settings for copper on oil palm:

* **Annual leaf sampling reminder** for frond 17 Cu on all peat and sandy blocks.
* **Quarterly imagery review** of peat blocks - trigger on NDVI below the peat-adjusted baseline.
* **Peat block flag** - tag all peat blocks in the field data model so they receive Cu-specific fertilizer plans.
