# Diagnose and Respond to Magnesium Deficiency in Oil Palm

> Identify magnesium deficiency in oil palm from bright orange whole older fronds (the classic 'orange frond' signature on light and sandy soils), and correct it with kieserite, dolomite, and balanced K:Mg fertilization.

Magnesium is central to chlorophyll production, and oil palm shows deficiency more dramatically than almost any other crop. The classic signature is **"orange frond"** - whole older fronds turning a startling bright orange while younger fronds remain green. It is most common on light, sandy, or heavily leached soils, and is induced by excess K application without matching Mg.

**Regional priority:** Universal on light and sandy soils; commonly seen alongside K deficiency on the same blocks. On peat, Mg deficiency is much rarer than Cu, N, and K.

## When oil palm is most vulnerable

From yield build-up (3 years) onward. Mg demand rises with bunch export, and chronic deficiency accumulates over multiple seasons on light soils.

## How magnesium deficiency shows in satellite data

* **Distinctive orange tint** visible in true-color imagery on affected blocks - one of the few nutrient disorders detectable in RGB imagery in oil palm.
* **Block-wide NDVI decline** on chronic sites, similar in magnitude to K deficiency.
* Slow trend rather than sudden drop; monthly to quarterly review is appropriate.
* Patchy signatures within a block often follow soil texture (worse on sandy patches).

  Mg orange-frond and K orange-spotting can look similar from above. The distinguishing signal is on the ground: Mg turns *whole fronds* orange; K produces *spots* on the leaflets that eventually merge. Both hit older fronds first.

## Field symptoms

* **Whole older fronds turn bright orange** - dramatic and unmistakable when severe.
* Orange color starts on the sunlight-exposed side of the frond and spreads inward.
* **Older fronds affected first**, younger fronds remain green.
* Green midrib may remain visible through the orange leaflets in early stages.
* Reduced frond dry weight and shorter fronds in chronic cases.
* Reduced bunch weight and stunted growth on immature palms.

## Reduce the damage by

* **Apply kieserite (magnesium sulphate)** as the standard Mg source - typically 1 to 2 kg per palm per year, split into 2 doses.
* **Apply dolomite** on acid soils - provides both Mg and lime, correcting pH at the same time.
* **Match K:Mg ratio** - typical target ratio is roughly 2:1 (K:Mg) by weight. Excessive K without matching Mg is a common cause of induced Mg deficiency.
* **Use magnesium-containing compound fertilizers** where custom mixing is not available.
* **Empty fruit bunch (EFB) mulching** contributes modest Mg along with K.
* **Correct soil acidity** on strongly acid soils - Mg availability drops sharply below pH 4.5.
* **Avoid over-liming on peat** - excess Ca and Mg on peat can lock up other micronutrients.

## Set an alert for early warning

  Turn the diagnosis into a trigger. Mg deficiency tracks with K management and light-soil zones; combine soil map with imagery review.

Recommended settings for magnesium on oil palm:

* **True-color imagery review** - schedule visual inspection twice per year on light-soil blocks; the orange tint often shows before NDVI moves substantially.
* **Annual leaf sampling reminder** for frond 17 K and Mg together.
* **Soil-zone map overlay** - flag sandy or light-soil zones for higher Mg allocation in the annual fertilizer plan.
