# Diagnose and Respond to Nitrogen Deficiency in Oil Palm

> Identify nitrogen deficiency in oil palm from uniform pale-green whole canopy and slow growth, and correct it with urea or ammonium sulphate applied in split doses.

Nitrogen is the nutrient oil palm needs in the largest amount for vegetative growth. Deficiency in oil palm looks less dramatic than in other crops - the whole canopy simply pales evenly - but it is one of the biggest yield levers, especially on immature palms and on peat soils where mineralization is slow.

**Regional priority:** Universal on sandy, leached, and peat soils; managed as a routine annual application on virtually all commercial plantations.

## When oil palm is most vulnerable

From nursery through peak yield. N demand is highest during the yield build-up phase (3 to 8 years) when the canopy is expanding fastest. On peat, N deficiency is chronic and needs continuous management throughout the stand's life.

## How nitrogen deficiency shows in satellite data

* **NDRE and NDVI both drop below the stand-age baseline** across the whole block.
* Uniform block-wide pattern - if pale green is patchy, suspect a different cause (Mg, K, disease, drainage).
* Slow trend on chronic sites; can develop faster on peat after a growth-flush period.
* Compare to a well-fertilized reference block or the [ecosystem baseline](/guides/Crop/Oil-Palm/oil-palm-ecosystems) to separate N deficiency from stand aging.

  Uniform pale-green canopy on peat is almost always N or Cu deficiency. On mineral soils, uniform pale-green is almost always N. Confirm with leaf analysis before large applications.

## Field symptoms

* **Whole canopy pale green to yellow-green** - the whole palm looks off-color, not just older or younger fronds.
* Older fronds may be slightly paler than younger, but the difference is far less than for K, Mg, or Cu.
* **Reduced frond production** and shorter fronds in chronic deficiency.
* Reduced bunch weight and number over multiple seasons.
* Slow overall growth rate on immature palms (short trunk, small canopy for age).
* Delayed maturity on nursery and immature palms.

## Reduce the damage by

* **Apply urea or ammonium sulphate** as the standard N sources. Ammonium sulphate is preferred on peat and on saline or high-pH soils. Urea is cheaper per unit N on mineral soils where volatilization can be managed.
* **Split N applications** - two to three doses per year on mineral soils; on peat, split more finely (three to four) because leaching is high.
* **Broadcast on the palm circle**, not on the trunk. Rake in where possible to reduce volatilization.
* **Adjust N to yield target and stand age** - immature palms need proportionally more N per unit dry matter than peak-yield palms.
* **Do not over-apply N without matching K, Mg, and B** - imbalanced high N worsens K and Mg deficiency and can trigger disease.
* **On peat**, monitor Cu together with N - the two commonly co-deficit.
* **Return empty fruit bunches** where available - modest N contribution alongside major K.

## Set an alert for early warning

  Turn the diagnosis into a trigger. N deficiency responds fast (weeks) to a top-dressing on mineral soils, so a monthly review during immature and yield build-up phases captures most cases.

Recommended settings for nitrogen on oil palm:

* **NDRE threshold alert** - trigger when block-average NDRE drops below the stand-age baseline for two consecutive months.
* **Annual leaf sampling reminder** for frond 17 N.
* **Split-application reminder** - schedule split doses timed to rainfall pattern rather than fixed dates.
