# Diagnose and Respond to Potassium Deficiency in Oil Palm

> Identify potassium deficiency in oil palm from confluent orange spotting on older fronds (the classic K signature on mineral soils), and correct it with regular MOP applications, split doses, and empty fruit bunch mulching.

Potassium is the nutrient oil palm removes in the largest amount at harvest (roughly 1.5 to 2 kg K per tonne of fresh fruit bunch). K deficiency is the most common nutrient issue on mineral soils and one of the biggest yield levers on any plantation older than 5 years. Symptoms are so specific they have a name of their own: **confluent orange spotting**.

**Regional priority:** Universal wherever oil palm is grown on mineral soils; particularly acute on sandy, weathered, or continuously cropped soils.

## When oil palm is most vulnerable

From yield build-up (3 years) onward. K demand peaks during peak yield (8 to 18 years) when the palm is exporting the most K per hectare per year.

## How potassium deficiency shows in satellite data

* **Block-wide NDVI or EVI below the stand-age baseline**, especially on light or sandy soils where K is chronically limiting.
* Slow, multi-year decline rather than a sudden drop - use monthly or quarterly trend review, not weekly alerts.
* Compare against the [stand-age ecosystem baseline](/guides/Crop/Oil-Palm/oil-palm-ecosystems) to separate K deficiency from stand aging. **Note the vocabulary changes here:** *peak yield (8 to 18 years)* is a vulnerability class on the [diagnosis page](/guides/Crop/Oil-Palm/oil-palm-diagnosis#stand-age-vulnerability), not a band. It straddles the 6 – 15 and 15 – 25 bands, so a block in it resolves from its stand age and environment, not from the class name.
* Not detectable at the individual-palm scale until symptoms are severe.

  K deficiency is almost always uniform within a block or a soil zone, not patchy. Patchy orange fronds usually indicate Magnesium deficiency instead. Confirm by frond position and by soil type.

## Field symptoms

* **Confluent orange spotting** - small pale-yellow spots that expand, merge, and turn bright orange, starting near the tips of leaflets on older fronds.
* Spots stay confined to the leaflet blade, with green tissue between them fading last.
* **Mid to lower canopy affected first**; upper (younger) fronds stay green longer.
* Reduced frond production and shorter fronds in chronic deficiency.
* Reduced bunch weight and bunch number after several seasons of chronic deficiency.
* Increased susceptibility to Ganoderma, sheath rot on inflorescences, and bunch failure.

## Reduce the damage by

* **Apply muriate of potash (MOP)** as the standard K source - typically 2 to 4 kg per palm per year on peak-yield stands, adjusted by leaf and soil analysis.
* **Split K applications** - two to three doses per year is more efficient than a single large application, especially on sandy soils where K leaches.
* **Empty fruit bunch (EFB) mulching** - the mill by-product returns large amounts of K to the field; apply on the palm circle or between rows.
* **Palm oil mill effluent (POME) application** where permitted - contributes K along with N and organic matter.
* **Match K to yield target** - high-yielding hybrid palms remove more K per hectare than older DxP crosses; use leaf analysis every 1 to 2 years to calibrate.
* **Balance K with N and Mg** - excess N without matching K worsens deficiency; excess K induces Mg deficiency. Keep the K:Mg ratio balanced.
* **Correct any drought or waterlogging** - K uptake is impaired under water stress.

## Set an alert for early warning

  Turn the diagnosis into a trigger. K deficiency is a *slow trend*, so the useful alert is a monthly or quarterly comparison against the stand-age baseline.

Recommended settings for potassium on oil palm:

* **Monthly NDVI trend alert** - trigger when the block's 3-month moving NDVI drops more than 5% below the stand-age baseline.
* **Annual leaf sampling reminder** - K deficiency is diagnosed most reliably by frond 17 leaf analysis; schedule sampling in the mid-year window.
* **Yield-tracking review** - a persistent gap between actual and expected bunch weight is a K signal even before visible spotting.
