# Oil Palm Diagnosis: Decide What a Field Change Means and What to Do

> The starting point for interpreting oil palm field changes across a 25-year stand. Covers all three pillars: abiotic stress, nutrient disorders, and biotic stress, plus a scout-first decision tree keyed to what you see on individual palms.

Oil palm is a 25-year crop with individual palms yielding bunches every 10 to 14 days. Diagnosis works at three scales at once: whole block, palm cluster, and individual palm. Use this guide to move from a field observation or a satellite alert to a specific cause and a specific action.

## The three pillars

## Scout-first decision tree

Use what you see first to pick the pillar. The scout looks at four things on each palm, in this order.

### 1. Block-level pattern

### 2. Frond color and position (nutrient decision tree)

Frond color patterns in oil palm are so specific they are often named after the deficiency. Match what you see to the table.

### 4. Spear and youngest fronds (growing-point decision tree)

| V-shaped notches in unopened frond    | Rhino beetle feeding                |

## Stand-age vulnerability

Different stresses matter at different ages. Use this alongside the pattern tables.

  **These are not the stand-age classes a band resolves against.** This table groups ages by *what goes wrong*; [Oil Palm Ecosystems](/guides/Crop/Oil-Palm/oil-palm-ecosystems) groups them by *what the canopy is doing*, and the boundaries do not line up. A 7-year-old block is **yield build-up** here and **prime mature** there; a 16-year-old block is **peak yield** here and **late mature** there.

  **The ecosystems page is the authority for anything that resolves a band.** Use the mapping below to cross from one to the other, and never quote a class from this table as if it keyed a band.

  Three of the five classes straddle a band boundary. **A block in one of those three has no single band**, and the platform resolves it from stand age directly rather than from this table.

## How satellites contribute

Oil palm imagery works at three scales at once. Match the tool to the question.

  Oil palm change is slow. A weekly NDVI review is over-monitoring for most abiotic and nutrient issues. Monthly is usually enough, except during outbreak or replanting phases.
