# Diagnose and Respond to Zinc Deficiency in Pineapple

> Identify zinc deficiency in pineapple from small, pale, distorted young leaves (crookneck) on high-pH or coral soils, and correct it with foliar zinc sulphate.

Zinc deficiency on pineapple is the classic **crookneck disorder**: young leaves emerge small, pale, twisted, and often bent to one side. Zn shares the high-pH lock-up pattern with iron. It is common on coral, calcareous, and heavily limed blocks and on peat where Zn availability drops with dry conditions.

**Regional priority:** Moderate to high on coral, calcareous, and peat soils; specific to certain zones in Peninsular Malaysia, Ivory Coast, and the Philippines.

## When pineapple is most vulnerable

From **early vegetative (month 2 or 3) onward**. Once distorted leaves form, they do not recover; only new growth after correction is normal.

## How zinc deficiency shows in satellite data

* Rarely visible at Sentinel scale unless block-wide.
* Distorted young leaves reduce canopy area over months, causing a slow NDVI shortfall.
* Confirm on the ground and by D-leaf analysis.

## Field symptoms

* **Small, narrow, pale young leaves** in the center whorl
* **"Crookneck"** - the whole rosette center bends to one side
* **Twisted or curled leaf tips**
* **Rosette compressed** and shorter than same-age plants
* **Reduced flowering response** to forcing if deficiency is severe
* Symptoms most visible on new growth after each spray cycle

## Reduce the damage by

* **Foliar zinc sulphate (0.5 to 1%)** applied to the leaf axil - repeat every 4 to 6 weeks.
* **Zinc chelate (Zn-EDTA)** on high-pH blocks where sulphate re-precipitates.
* **Do not over-lime** - keeping pH below 6.0 keeps Zn available.
* **Apply Zn at planting** on known deficient blocks - broadcast zinc sulphate at 20 to 30 kg/ha, incorporated.
* **Combine with foliar Fe** on high-pH blocks; they usually co-occur.
* **D-leaf analysis** - target 8 to 15 ppm Zn in the D-leaf. This is a generic target with no site, soil, cultivar or season qualifier, so it supports *inside* or *outside* and no finer grade — see [Reading a tissue analysis](/snippets/tissue-diagnosis).

## Set an alert for early warning

  Turn the diagnosis into a trigger. Zn deficiency is chronic and pH-driven; schedule sampling and foliar reminders.

Recommended settings for zinc on pineapple:

* **D-leaf sampling reminder** - month 6 to 8, include Zn on high-pH blocks.
* **Foliar-application follow-up** - schedule a re-check 4 weeks after every Zn spray.
* **Soil pH reminder** - annual check on any block that has shown Zn deficiency.
