# Diagnose and Respond to False Smut in Rice

> Identify false smut from yellow-green fungal balls replacing grains on the panicle, and control it with resistant varieties, balanced N, and preventive fungicide at booting.

False smut, caused by *Ustilaginoidea virens*, replaces individual grains with large yellow-green to olive-black fungal balls. It has become increasingly common with high-yielding hybrid rice and heavy N application. Beyond yield loss, the smut balls contain toxins (ustiloxins) that reduce grain quality and pose a food-safety concern.

## When rice is most vulnerable

Infection happens at booting to early flowering. Symptoms only become visible after heading, so preventive control at booting is the only effective timing.

## How false smut shows in satellite data

* **No reliable satellite signature at the field scale** - individual smut balls are too small to detect.
* **Yield-map or reports data** show unexpected reductions in graded quality despite normal NDVI - use this as an indirect indicator.
* Cool, humid, cloudy weather at booting is the leading indicator; use weather alerts rather than imagery.

  Satellite imagery does not detect false smut. Prevention is scheduled by growth stage and weather, not by NDVI change.

## Field symptoms

* Individual grains replaced by yellow-green to olive-black velvety fungal balls, larger than a normal grain
* Fungal balls burst and release olive-black spores at maturity
* Only a few grains per panicle affected in mild cases; can reach 30 to 50% in severe cases

## Reduce the damage by

* **Grow moderately resistant cultivars** and avoid highly susceptible hybrids on chronic false-smut fields.
* **Avoid excessive N**, especially late N application near booting.
* **Preventive fungicide** (propiconazole, tebuconazole, or copper hydroxide) at booting - the only fungicide timing that works. Curative sprays after symptoms appear are ineffective.
* **Deep plowing** to bury sclerotia between seasons.
* **Rotate with non-host crops** where practical.
* **Do not use grain from infected fields as seed.**

## Set an alert for early warning

Recommended settings for false smut on rice:

* **Weather alert** - cool nights (below 25 C) and humidity above 90% for 3+ nights around booting.
* **Calendar reminder** - schedule a fungicide-decision review at panicle initiation on susceptible varieties, regardless of NDVI.
