# Diagnose and Respond to Sedge Weeds in Rice

> Identify sedge weeds like Cyperus rotundus and C. difformis from triangular stems and dense low mats, and control them with early flooding, herbicides, and tuber depletion.

Sedges - notably purple nutsedge (*Cyperus rotundus*), rice flatsedge (*C. iria*), and small-flower umbrella-sedge (*C. difformis*) - are the second most damaging weed group in rice after grasses. They compete strongly for nutrients and, in the case of *C. rotundus*, spread through persistent underground tubers that make them very difficult to eradicate.

## When rice is most vulnerable

First 30 to 45 days after transplanting. Nutsedge is a season-long problem because of tuber sprouting.

## How sedges show in satellite data

* **Uneven low-canopy zones** at establishment - sedges add greenness but rarely reach the height of rice.
* Same zones affected season after season because tubers persist for years - visible as chronic low-yield patches in seasonal-analysis reports.
* Poor separation from grass weeds and nutrient deficiency in imagery alone.

  Nutsedge tubers survive drying, tillage, and most single herbicide applications. Managing it is a multi-season effort, not a one-time spray decision.

## Field symptoms

* Triangular stems (grasses have round or flat stems) - the field diagnostic test
* V-shaped leaves in three ranks (not two, as in grasses)
* Purple nutsedge: dark green leaves with a shiny surface; underground tubers
* Umbrella-like flower clusters at maturity
* Sedges thrive in poorly leveled fields with alternating wet and dry patches

## Reduce the damage by

* **Level the field well** and maintain 3 to 5 cm standing water to suppress sedge germination.
* **Prevent sedge seed set** - hand-remove flowering sedges before they seed.
* **Deplete nutsedge tubers** through repeated tillage in dry fallow (each tillage forces a tuber to sprout, using up its reserves).
* **Pre-emergence herbicide** - pretilachlor + safener, oxadiargyl, or pyrazosulfuron - within 3 to 5 days of transplanting.
* **Post-emergence herbicide** - bensulfuron-methyl, ethoxysulfuron, or 2,4-D (grass rice safe rate) for broadleaf sedges; MCPA for nutsedge.
* **Do not rely on a single herbicide** for repeated seasons on nutsedge; rotate modes of action.

## Set an alert for early warning

  Turn the diagnosis into a trigger. Because sedge zones are chronic, the highest-value alert is a *seasonal comparison* rather than a within-season trigger.

Recommended settings for sedges on rice:
