# Scale Insects and Mealybugs on Rubber

> Scale insects and mealybugs on rubber stems: how to spot infestations on young stands, natural-enemy management, and when to intervene chemically.

**Scale insects** (various species) and **mealybugs** occasionally infest young rubber stands, feeding on stems and branches. Damage is usually minor and self-correcting because natural enemies (ladybird beetles, parasitoid wasps) keep populations in check. Chemical intervention is only needed on severe immature-block outbreaks.

## Cause

* **Immature blocks** (year 1 to 4) with tender bark
* **Ant activity** protecting scales/mealybugs from natural enemies
* **Dry weather** favoring scale reproduction
* **Neighboring host crops** (some scales are polyphagous)

## Effect

* Small brown, grey, or white scales attached to young stems and branches
* Sooty mold on leaves (from honeydew)
* Reduced growth on heavily infested saplings
* Rarely fatal but delays canopy build
