# Weed Management in Rubber

> The main problem weeds in Malaysian rubber (Imperata, Mikania, Asystasia, Chromolaena), when they matter, and the cover-crop-first management approach.

Weeds compete with rubber for water, nutrients, and light, most critically on **immature blocks (year 0 to 4)** before canopy closure. After canopy closure (year 5 to 6), most weeds die back naturally under the shade. Cover crops (Mucuna, Pueraria, Calopogonium) are the first line of defense and reduce weed pressure by 70 to 90% on new plantings.

## Effect

## Cover-crop-first approach

Malaysian rubber best practice: plant a **legume cover crop mixture** at planting.

* **Mucuna bracteata** (dominant modern choice, fast growth, shade-tolerant)
* **Pueraria phaseoloides** (traditional, still widely used)
* **Calopogonium mucunoides**, **Centrosema pubescens** (companion species)

Well-established cover crops:

* Suppress 70 to 90% of weeds through competition and shade
* Fix 100 to 200 kg N/ha/year
* Reduce erosion on sloping blocks
* Reduce weed-control cost by \~60% in years 1 to 3
