The platform aggregates imagery from multiple satellite constellations and drone uploads so you always have the best available data for your fields — whether that means free daily Sentinel-2 coverage or sub-meter drone orthomosaics captured during a scouting flight. Each source has different characteristics in terms of resolution, revisit frequency, and cost, and the platform is designed to seamlessly blend them into a unified view of every field you manage.

Satellite Sources

Automatic vs. Manual Imagery

Automatically ingested (no setup required) Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8/9 imagery is ingested automatically for all registered fields at no additional cost. As soon as you create a field boundary, the platform begins pulling available scenes and processing them for vegetation index calculations. Historical imagery going back to Sentinel-2’s operational start in 2015 is also available for retrospective analysis. Commercial imagery (subscription required) Planet and Maxar imagery requires a separate commercial subscription with those providers. Once you have a subscription, connect it to the platform by navigating to Settings > Imagery Sources and entering your API credentials. After connecting, high-resolution imagery will be automatically ingested alongside free sources for all active fields.
Commercial imagery costs are governed by your agreement with Planet or Maxar and are billed directly by those providers — not through SemaiSens. Connecting a commercial account will cause the platform to make imagery requests on your behalf, which may count against your subscription quota. Review your provider’s pricing before enabling automatic high-resolution ingestion.

Drone Imagery

When satellite resolution is not sufficient for the detail level your scouting requires, you can upload drone-captured orthomosaics directly to the platform. Drone imagery is processed using the same pipeline as satellite imagery — atmospherically corrected where metadata permits — and immediately available as an analysis layer alongside your satellite-derived indices. Open the field

Navigate to the field you want to attach the drone imagery to and open the field detail view.

Go to the Imagery tab

Select the Imagery tab at the top of the field view to see all imagery layers associated with this field.

Start the upload

Click Upload and select your GeoTIFF file from your local machine. The uploader accepts files up to 2 GB.

Confirm geolocation

The platform reads the embedded geospatial metadata from the GeoTIFF and displays a preview overlay on the field map. Confirm that the drone imagery aligns correctly with your field boundary, then click Confirm to begin processing.

Wait for processing

Processing time depends on file size and band count, typically between 2 and 15 minutes. You will receive an in-app notification and an email when the layer is ready.
Make sure your drone imagery is processed into a georeferenced orthomosaic before uploading. Raw UAV images or non-georeferenced files are not supported. Most drone processing software — including DJI Terra, Pix4D, and Agisoft Metashape — exports analysis-ready GeoTIFFs directly.

Image Quality & Cloud Cover

Optical satellite imagery is only useful when the sky above your field is clear. The platform automatically filters out scenes with more than 20% cloud cover over your field boundary, ensuring that cloudy scenes do not contaminate your index time series or trigger false alerts. If you work in a persistently cloudy region or need to capture data during a cloudy period, you can adjust the cloud cover threshold:
  1. Go to Settings > Preferences > Cloud Cover Filter.
  2. Move the slider to your desired maximum cloud cover percentage (0–100%).
  3. Save your preferences. The new threshold applies to all future image ingestion for your organization.
Raising the cloud cover threshold allows more images into your time series but increases the risk of cloud-contaminated pixels affecting index values. If you raise the threshold, inspect imagery carefully on the map before including it in prescriptions or reports. Lowering the threshold below 20% may result in longer gaps between available scenes in cloudy climates.

Data Retention

Processed imagery and index layers are retained for 2 years on Free and Pro plans. Enterprise plans include unlimited historical data retention. If you need to preserve data beyond the retention window on a Free or Pro plan, export your imagery and observation time series before the retention period expires.
