When pineapple is most vulnerable
From fruit set (month 15) through harvest (month 22). Vegetative plants can withstand strong wind with limited damage; fruiting plants cannot.How wind damage shows in satellite data
- Sudden localized NDVI drop after a storm event in exposed rows.
- Pattern follows wind direction and topography (windward slopes and gap zones).
- Best confirmed by post-storm drone flight; Sentinel-scale imagery misses individual toppled plants.
Field symptoms
- Tipped-over fruiting plants, root plate lifted
- Snapped peduncles with fruit lying on the mulch
- Bruised, torn, or shredded leaves on the windward side
- Clustered damage on outer rows, headlands, and gap zones
- Fruit contamination with mud and mulch fragments (post-harvest quality risk)
Reduce the damage by
- Establish windbreaks on exposed blocks - Leucaena, Gliricidia, or bamboo hedges perpendicular to prevailing wind.
- Support fruiting plants with stakes or peduncle ties on high-value MD2 blocks.
- Choose shorter-statured varieties on wind-exposed sites (Sarawak / Moris) rather than tall hybrids.
- Time harvest before the peak wind or cyclone season where possible.
- Post-storm triage - within 48 hours, harvest fruit that has fallen on the mulch (still marketable) before rot sets in.
- Avoid excessive N in late vegetative - lush, tall plants lodge more easily.
Set an alert for early warning
Recommended settings for wind on pineapple:- Weather alert - forecast wind speed above 50 km/h during fruit development or ripening.
- Cyclone / typhoon warning - trigger a post-storm scouting dispatch on any block within the projected path.
- NDVI post-storm alert - trigger on a 0.10 or greater block NDVI drop within 48 hours of a wind event.
