When pineapple is most vulnerable
At forcing to fruit set (months 12 to 15) - thrips feeding at floral induction causes fruit scars and knobs that persist to harvest. Also at early vegetative where PYSV is a concern. How thrips show in satellite data
- Not detectable at Sentinel scale.
- Population dynamics track dry-hot weather; use weather forecast as the leading indicator.
Field symptoms
- Silver flecking on leaf surfaces and fruit shells
- Small, black frass dots on the flecked surfaces
- Fruit scarring and knobbing if feeding was heavy at fruit set
- Distorted young leaves in advanced infestation
- Yellow spot symptoms where PYSV is present - yellow leaf spots that expand to necrotic patches, plant collapse
- Best confirmed by tapping a leaf whorl over a white tray and counting the small yellow-brown insects
Reduce the damage by
- Pre-forcing spray - a single spinetoram or abamectin application before floral induction protects the developing fruit.
- Scout with white tray beat sampling every 2 weeks during dry weather.
- Threshold - action at more than 5 thrips per whorl during forcing to fruit-set window.
- Silver mulch deters thrips landing compared with black mulch.
- Rogue PYSV-symptomatic plants promptly in yellow-spot regions to reduce virus source.
- Rotate modes of action to slow resistance; thrips resistance develops fast. Spinetoram and abamectin are two groups - a third rotation partner must be chosen from the current register. Methomyl has been banned in Malaysia since 1974 and is not a rotation partner - see Pesticide registration.
- Avoid broad-spectrum sprays that kill thrips predators (Orius, predatory mites).
Set an alert for early warning
Recommended settings for thrips on pineapple:- Weather alert - 10 or more consecutive days above 30 C with rainfall below 20 mm triggers a thrips scout.
- Pre-forcing reminder - schedule a thrips spray 1 week before every forcing application.
- PYSV follow-up alert - trigger a rogue-and-record walk if yellow-spot symptoms are found on any plant.
