Calcium is critical for cell wall integrity, fruit firmness, and shelf life. On pineapple, deficiency shows as edge burn on older leaves and, most importantly, as cracked, misshapen, short-shelf-life fruit. Ca uptake is passive and depends on transpiration, so drought and waterlogging both worsen deficiency even when soil Ca is adequate. Regional priority: Moderate on acid mineral soils (leached Ca), peat, and any block with high K without matching Ca.

When pineapple is most vulnerable

Most damaging at fruit set to fruit development (months 14 to 18). Ca does not redistribute in the plant, so what is in the fruit at set is what stays there.

How calcium deficiency shows in satellite data

  • Not directly detectable. Ca deficiency mainly hits fruit quality, not canopy greenness.
  • Indirect indicator: acid, sandy, or leached soils flagged as low-Ca zones from block soil maps.
  • Confirm by soil test, D-leaf analysis, and fruit sampling.

Field symptoms

  • Red-brown edge burn on older leaves, starting at the tip
  • Cracked, misshapen fruit with cavities inside
  • Short shelf life and translucent flesh after ripening
  • Reduced fruit weight in severe cases
  • Overlap with salinity - separate by soil EC test
  • Overlap with K excess - excess K reduces Ca uptake

Reduce the damage by

  • Lime (CaCO3) or dolomite to raise soil Ca and pH - typically 1 to 3 t/ha per cycle on acid soils.
  • Gypsum (CaSO4) on sodic or high-K blocks where pH is already fine - supplies Ca without raising pH.
  • Foliar calcium nitrate or calcium chloride (0.5 to 1%) at fruit set and 2 to 3 weeks after - the critical windows for fruit-quality Ca.
  • Maintain steady irrigation through fruit development - passive Ca uptake needs stable transpiration.
  • Balance K, Mg, and Ca - excess K depresses Ca uptake even when soil Ca is adequate.
  • D-leaf analysis - target 0.15 to 0.30% Ca in the D-leaf. This is a generic target with no site, soil, cultivar or season qualifier, so it supports inside or outside and no finer grade — see Reading a tissue analysis.

Set an alert for early warning

Turn the diagnosis into a trigger. Ca deficiency is a fruit-quality signal, so schedule foliar reminders around fruit set and cull-rate tracking at harvest.
Recommended settings for calcium on pineapple:
  • Foliar Ca reminder - schedule 2 to 3 sprays starting at fruit set on high-K and acid blocks.
  • Soil Ca sampling reminder - every 2 cycles on acid mineral and BRIS soils.
  • Fruit-quality tracking - flag blocks with cull rate above 8% for internal defects.
