When rice is most vulnerable

- Very rapid, large NDVI drops between consecutive passes - often 0.20 or more in less than a week.
- Pattern is often field-scale and follows the direction of larval movement across the crop.
- Different from drought (slow) and disease (usually with a discoloration pattern) - armyworm damage is fast and mechanical.
Field symptoms
- Leaves chewed from the margin inward, often overnight
- Only leaf midribs remain in severe defoliation
- Larvae found in the base of the canopy, in soil cracks, or under debris during the day
- Panicles cut at the base in reproductive-stage attacks
- Frass (dark green droppings) at the plant base
Reduce the damage by
- Encourage bird predation - ducks in the field between crops eat larvae and pupae.
- Flood the field temporarily to force larvae out of cracks and expose them to predators.
- Hand-collect and destroy where practical on small holdings.
- Selective insecticide (chlorantraniliprole, emamectin benzoate, or spinosad) applied late afternoon or evening when larvae are active - only if scouting confirms an active outbreak.
- Grow moderately resistant cultivars where available.
- Community-level response - armyworm outbreaks are regional; coordinated action across neighboring fields is more effective than individual response.
