Fusarium Wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. elaeidis, is the most economically damaging oil palm disease in West and Central Africa. It also occurs in Latin American plantings using West African seed. The pathogen invades the vascular system, cutting off water transport. It is soil-borne and seed-transmitted, making sanitation and clean planting material the main lines of defense. Regional priority: Very high in West and Central Africa (Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, DRC, Ghana). Present in Latin America from imported African material. Rare in Southeast Asia.

When oil palm is most vulnerable

Any stage, though the disease is most damaging on immature and yield build-up palms (2 to 10 years). Nursery-stage infection through contaminated seed is the primary entry point at the plantation level.

How Fusarium Wilt shows in satellite data

  • Scattered or clustered individual-palm decline across a block, spreading over months to years.
  • Individual-palm signature similar to Ganoderma in imagery - one crown yellowing while neighbors remain healthy. Ground inspection separates them.
  • Block-scale NDVI decline on heavily infected blocks over multiple seasons.
  • High-resolution imagery detects declining crowns; standard satellite imagery is too coarse.
Fusarium Wilt and Ganoderma look similar in aerial imagery. The distinguishing test is on the ground: Ganoderma produces basal trunk brackets; Fusarium Wilt does not. Instead, Fusarium produces internal vascular browning visible when the trunk or petiole is cut.

Field symptoms

Acute form (young palms):
  • Rapid wilting - a healthy-looking palm collapses within weeks.
  • One-sided frond desiccation - fronds on one side of the crown dry out first.
  • Chlorosis and death of the whole crown within months.
Chronic form (older palms):
  • Progressive frond desiccation starting with the older fronds.
  • Dry, hanging fronds persist around the trunk.
  • Reduced bunch production for years before eventual death.
  • Internal vascular browning - when a petiole or trunk is cut, red-brown streaks are visible along the vascular tissue.
Diagnostic ground test:
  • Cut an older petiole at the base and inspect the cross-section for red-brown vascular streaks.
  • No basal trunk brackets (this rules out Ganoderma).

Reduce the damage by

  • Plant Fusarium-tolerant material - several West African breeding programs (NIFOR, CIRAD, PORAM) release progeny with proven field tolerance. Prescreening seedlings for wilt resistance is standard practice.
  • Use clean seed and nursery hygiene - the pathogen is seed-transmissible. Source seed from certified pathogen-free suppliers and screen nursery seedlings.
  • Sanitation felling - remove and destroy heavily infected palms. Do not leave infected material or roots on site.
  • Avoid replanting susceptible material in previously affected blocks - the pathogen persists in soil for years.
  • Improve soil drainage and health - stressed palms are more susceptible; well-drained, well-fertilized palms tolerate low-level inoculum better.
  • Rotate through a cover crop or fallow at replant on chronically infected sites where possible.
  • No effective chemical control - do not rely on fungicide application to soil or trunk.

Set an alert for early warning

Turn the diagnosis into a trigger. Fusarium Wilt census is very similar to Ganoderma census - a quarterly walk of every palm on stands over 3 years old.
Recommended settings for Fusarium Wilt on oil palm:
  • Quarterly census reminder on all stands in endemic regions.
  • Palm-cluster NDVI drop alert - trigger on any localized zone decline of 0.10 or more month over month.
  • Nursery inspection reminder - screen every batch of seedlings before field planting.
  • Regional coordination - align census cycles with any national or regional plantation health program.
