Red Ring disease is caused by the nematode Bursaphelenchus cocophilus and is transmitted primarily by the American palm weevil (Rhynchophorus palmarum). The disease name comes from the characteristic red-brown ring visible when the trunk of an infected palm is cut in cross-section. It kills palms within months once symptoms appear and is a serious problem across the American tropics. Regional priority: High in Latin America (Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Venezuela, Central America). Not present in Southeast Asia or Africa.

When oil palm is most vulnerable

Any age from immature onward. Palms in the 3 to 15 year range are most commonly affected. Recent planting near infected coconut, ornamental palm, or oil palm sites is a strong risk factor.

How Red Ring shows in satellite data

  • Individual-palm decline in high-resolution imagery, progressing from crown yellowing to full collapse over 2 to 4 months.
  • Scattered pattern across the plantation rather than clustered - vector-driven distribution follows weevil movement.
  • Not distinguishable from other systemic diseases (Bud Rot, Fusarium Wilt) in imagery. Ground diagnosis is required.
  • Weevil trap catch data paired with imagery gives a much stronger picture than either alone.
Red Ring is confirmed only by cutting the trunk. Do not misdiagnose from crown symptoms alone - Bud Rot, Fusarium Wilt, and Red Ring all present with crown decline.

Field symptoms

  • Progressive frond yellowing starting with the mid-canopy fronds and progressing up and down.
  • Shortened and stunted new fronds emerging from the crown.
  • Reduced bunch production in the months leading to full decline.
  • Death within 2 to 4 months of first visible symptoms.
  • Red-brown ring 3 to 5 cm inside the trunk, visible in cross-section - the diagnostic sign.
  • Palm weevil bore holes and frass near the trunk base.

Reduce the damage by

  • Trap and remove palm weevils - pheromone-baited traps combined with plant volatiles significantly reduce vector populations. Trap density and maintenance are the key controls.
  • Sanitation felling - fell and destroy infected palms as soon as diagnosis is confirmed. Do not leave infected trunk material on site - it becomes a weevil breeding site.
  • Destroy weevil breeding sites - remove decaying palm material, fallen trunks, and pruning debris from the block.
  • Do not prune excessively or leave large wounds - weevils are attracted to fresh wounds and volatiles.
  • Coordinated regional weevil management - one estate cannot control weevil populations alone if neighbors leave breeding sites intact.
  • Screen planting material for weevil damage and possible nematode carriage.
  • No effective chemical treatment for infected palms - focus resources on vector control.

  • Weekly weevil trap review in endemic zones.
  • Palm-cluster NDVI drop alert - trigger on scattered individual palm decline (not clustered - use pattern to distinguish from Ganoderma).
  • Sanitation compliance reminder - schedule regular verification that felled palms have been destroyed and breeding sites cleared.
