Palm weevils in the genus Rhynchophorus are large boring beetles that damage oil palm directly through larval tunneling in the trunk and crown, and indirectly by transmitting the nematode that causes Red Ring disease. The primary species differ by region: R. palmarum (American palm weevil) in Latin America, R. ferrugineus (red palm weevil) in Asia and parts of the Middle East, and R. phoenicis (African palm weevil) in Africa. Regional priority: High wherever oil palm is grown. Extremely high in Latin America where the weevil is also the Red Ring vector.

When oil palm is most vulnerable

Any age, but palms with fresh wounds (from pruning, harvesting, or lightning) and palms already weakened by other stresses are most susceptible. Immature palms suffer the highest mortality from direct weevil attack; mature palms more commonly die from vectored Red Ring disease.

How palm weevil shows in satellite data

  • No reliable satellite signature for direct weevil damage - internal trunk tunneling is invisible from above until the palm collapses.
  • Palm mortality gaps in high-resolution imagery on chronically infested blocks.
  • Trap catch data is the primary quantitative indicator, not imagery.
  • Combined with Red Ring monitoring in Latin America because the two are epidemiologically linked.
Palm weevil damage is often diagnosed only after the palm is dying. Trap networks and wound management are the useful controls; imagery does not catch this pest in time.

Field symptoms

  • Bore holes in the trunk, especially near the crown and at the base of frond petioles.
  • Oozing sap or fermented smell at the entry points.
  • Frass (chewed fiber and larval droppings) at the base of the trunk.
  • Wilting and yellowing of one or several fronds without other obvious cause.
  • Loud chewing sounds from inside the trunk in heavy infestation (audible on quiet mornings).
  • Adult weevils visible near fresh wounds or on the crown, especially in the evening.
  • Larval galleries (large tunnels filled with frass) visible when the trunk is cut open.

Reduce the damage by

  • Pheromone trapping - use pheromone-baited traps combined with plant volatiles at the recommended density and service them regularly. This is the primary quantitative control.
  • Wound management - avoid unnecessary pruning and harvest damage. Where wounds occur, treat with a wound-sealing paint or insecticide to prevent weevil colonization.
  • Sanitation of breeding sites - remove and destroy fallen trunks, decaying stumps, and pruning debris. These are prime weevil breeding sites.
  • Sanitation felling of heavily infested palms - fell and destroy before larvae mature and disperse.
  • Regional coordination - weevils fly across boundaries; individual-farm control is limited if neighbors leave breeding material intact.

  • No effective systemic chemical control for infested palms - focus resources on trapping and sanitation.

Set an alert for early warning

Turn the diagnosis into a trigger. Weevil management is a trap-count and sanitation discipline; alerts should focus on trap thresholds and sanitation compliance rather than imagery.
