Bagworms (Metisa plana, Mahasena corbetti, Pteroma pendula) are the most economically damaging defoliating pests of oil palm in Southeast Asia. Each larva builds a portable silk bag decorated with leaflet fragments, feeds inside it, and moves along the fronds. Outbreaks can defoliate large blocks in weeks and cause yield losses that persist for 12 to 24 months. Regional priority: Very high in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Present but less economically important in other regions.

When oil palm is most vulnerable

Any age from immature onward. Peak-yield stands (8 to 18 years) suffer the largest absolute yield losses because they have the most bunches to lose. Immature palms recover slowly and can be permanently stunted by severe outbreaks.

How bagworms show in satellite data

  • Rapid NDVI drop across affected blocks as defoliation progresses. Distinguishable from disease by speed (weeks) and pattern (block-wide rather than clustered).
  • True-color imagery shows the browning canopy in severe outbreaks.
  • High-resolution or drone imagery shows individual defoliation on affected fronds.
  • Field-scale NDVI alerts during outbreak season are one of the most useful bagworm early-warning signals from satellite data.
Bagworm outbreaks build fast. By the time full defoliation shows in NDVI, the population has already gone through 2 or 3 generations and the palm has lost photosynthetic area that takes 12 to 18 months to replace.

Field symptoms

  • Silk bags hanging from fronds, 1 to 5 cm long depending on species and instar. Each bag contains a live larva and is decorated with leaflet fragments.
  • Window-pane feeding damage - larvae scrape the leaflet surface, leaving translucent windows that later dry and turn brown.
  • Skeletonized leaflets in heavy infestation.
  • Whole fronds turning brown and dying in severe cases.
  • Frass (larval droppings) accumulating on lower fronds and the ground.
  • Bag census counts are the standard field measurement - number of live bags per frond.

Reduce the damage by

  • Preserve natural enemies - parasitoid wasps (Brachymeria, Apanteles), predators, and entomopathogenic fungi provide substantial control in undisturbed environments. Broad-spectrum insecticide use has repeatedly triggered secondary bagworm outbreaks by killing parasitoids.
  • Establish beneficial plant borders - flowering plants (Turnera subulata, Cassia cobanensis, Antigonon leptopus) around blocks feed adult parasitoids and increase parasitism rates.
  • Regular census - count live bags on frond 9 or 17 monthly. Establish a rolling baseline; act when counts exceed the economic threshold (typically 5 to 10 live bags per frond for Metisa plana).
  • Trunk injection with a systemic insecticide registered for the method - emamectin benzoate, or acephate, which is restricted to coconut and oil palm and requires a purchase authorisation. Injection is localized and spares free-flying parasitoids. Only when scouting confirms threshold breach. Monocrotophos, the traditional trunk-injection active, has been banned in Malaysia since 31 December 2025 and must not be used - see Pesticide registration.
  • Selective insecticide spot spraying on outbreak patches - avoid area-wide broadcast spraying.
  • Do not spray broad-spectrum insecticides prophylactically - this is the single most reliable way to cause a bagworm outbreak.
  • Coordinate with neighbors - bagworm moths disperse across boundaries; regional monitoring is more effective.

Set an alert for early warning

Turn the diagnosis into a trigger. Bagworm alerts should combine census data with imagery - imagery flags the block, census tells you the population level and instar.
Recommended settings for bagworms on oil palm:
  • Monthly bag census reminder on all blocks over 3 years old.
  • NDVI drop alert during outbreak seasons - trigger on a drop of 0.10 or more month over month.
  • Historical hotspot map - flag blocks with previous outbreaks for higher scouting frequency.
