From booting through flowering. Water stress during this window causes the largest yield losses of any growth stage.How drought shows in satellite data
- NDWI drops first, often 1 to 2 imagery passes before NDVI reacts. Watch NDWI as the leading indicator.
- NDVI decline follows, usually as a gradual downward slope rather than a sudden collapse.
- Patterns often appear first in elevated zones, sandy patches, and field edges where water holds less well.
- Distinct from submergence (sudden NDVI collapse after rain) and salinity (patchy in low-lying / coastal zones).
Field symptoms
- Stunted growth
- Leaf rolling
- Burning of leaf tips
- Early leaf senescence (early aging)
- Occurrence of whiteheads and spikelet sterility
- Flowering can be earlier or later depending on the variety
Reduce the damage by
- Irrigation - the best method but often expensive and difficult.
- Having leveled fields so water spreads evenly and does not pool away from stressed zones.
- Choosing a good cultivar and a planting date that increases the probability of moisture being available at flowering.
- Direct seeding establishment, which makes better use of early rains and helps to avoid late seasons.
- Good nutrient management to avoid drought-induced nutrient limitations.
- Improving the soil so it can better hold water (for example, by using organic materials like manure or crop residues).
Set an alert for early warning
Recommended settings for drought on rice:- NDWI threshold alert - trigger when NDWI falls below your dry-baseline for the field, one to two weeks before booting.
- NDVI drop alert - trigger on a drop of 0.10 or more between consecutive passes during booting to flowering.
- Weather alert - drought stress event (consecutive days below 30% field capacity).
