- Persistently low NDVI and NDRE across the whole field or in the same weak zones season after season, independent of weather.
- The problem is structural, not event-driven, so it looks flat and chronic rather than a sudden drop.
- Often paired with slow canopy development early in the season - the field never reaches the NDVI band expected for its rice ecosystem.
- Overlaps visually with prolonged drought or salinity; separate them using field history and location (upland weathered soils vs coastal saline vs recent dry spell).
Options to reduce the damage
- If irrigation is available, such soils can still be productive because flooding reduces the toxicities and increases nutrient availability.
- Use the right cultivars - sometimes traditional varieties have a wider tolerance to the combination of abiotic stresses occurring on such soils.
- In upland environments, fallow periods and crop rotations help to restore or maintain a limited soil fertility.
- Add small rates of inorganic fertilizer - apart from N, P and K, sulfur and magnesium limitations can occur on such soils.
- Recycle crop residues and apply organic fertilizers - very important to maintain the limited soil fertility. Use of charcoal (or char from crop residues) as a soil amendment is a promising indigenous technology to increase soil fertility on such soils.
Set an alert for early warning
Recommended settings for poor soil on rice:- NDRE threshold alert - trigger when NDRE remains below your fertile-field baseline for three consecutive passes during tillering.
